Supreme Court Ruling on Miranda Rights

On Thursday, June 23rd, the Supreme Court ruled that police officers could not be sued under civil rights law if they do not read a suspect their Miranda Rights. This new ruling, however, does not affect the exclusion of such evidence being used in the suspect’s criminal trial.

New Chief of Police in Cary, North Carolina

Supreme Court Ruling on the Indefinite Detainment of Immigrants

On June 13th, the Supreme Court ruled that detained immigrants in the US are not entitled to bond hearings, meaning they could be detained indefinitely. At this time, the Court also ruled that if detainees want to argue their right to a bond hearing, they have to bring their cases up individually.

Arizona Death Row Inmates Too Late on Raising Ineffective Counsel Evidence

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court sided with the state of Arizona when two death row inmates tried to raise evidence of ineffective counsel during a federal habeas appeal. Such evidence wasn’t raised in state court, and it’s very rare that a federal court will hear what wasn’t brought up with the state.

New Settlement to Regain Driver’s License

On March 4th, District judge Thomas Schroeder approved an agreement to help North Carolina residents regain their driver’s license. More specifically, to help residents who lost their license due to not being able to pay traffic fines and court costs.

Raleigh Police and Social Workers Now Working Together

Mental health and addiction contribute to a great deal of violent crimes. However, when situations like this arise, putting the perpetrators in jail isn’t always the answer.
